2 Timothy 3:16 “All scripture is given by inspiration of God, and is profitable for doctrine, for reproof, for correction, for instruction in righteousness:”
A. All Scripture is inspired by God and is profitable
1. Old Testament
Some do not feel it is relevant to refer to the O/T because they have the New Testament. However, the O/T reveals Christ and teaches, testifying of His first coming.
John 5:39 “Search the scriptures; for in them ye think ye have eternal life: and they are they which testify of me.”
2. The Epistles
Some people only consider the Gospels to be inspired by God because they reference the words of Christ. However, the apostles were also moved by God with the same Spirit to pen down the Epistles.
1 Thessalonians 2:13 “For this cause also thank we God without ceasing, because, when ye received the word of God which ye heard of us, ye received it not as the word of men, but as it is in truth, the word of God, which effectually worketh also in you that believe.”
3. The Gospel
1 Corinthians 15:1-4 "Moreover, brethren, I declare unto you the gospel which I preached unto you, which also ye have received, and wherein ye stand; vs 2 By which also ye are saved, if ye keep in memory what I preached unto you, unless ye have believed in vain. vs 3 For I delivered unto you first of all that which I also received, how that Christ died for our sins according to the scriptures; vs 4 And that he was buried, and that he rose again the third day according to the scriptures:"
B. The Word of God is Profitable for:
2 Timothy 3:15 “And that from a child thou hast known the holy scriptures, which are able to make thee wise unto salvation through faith which is in Christ Jesus.”
The word of God is good, godly teaching to be taught and adhered to:
Proverbs 4:2 “For I give you good doctrine, forsake ye not my law.”
The Word of God convicts and reveals the errors of the erring one. It shows proof/evidence of where we have gone wrong.
2 Timothy 4:2 “Preach the word; be instant in season, out of season; reprove, rebuke, exhort with all longsuffering and doctrine.”
The Word of God helps us know how to make the wrong right; helps us to be restored to an upright or right state, and helps straighten the crooked path.
5. Instruction in Righteousness
The Word of God educates us, trains us, and disciplines us in God’s righteousness. It shows us how to keep on walking right.
2 Timothy 3:17 “That the man of God may be perfect…”
It is God’s desire that His disciples grow to be established in the faith – a faith that would help them mature in Christlikeness.
7. Good Works
2 Timothy 3:17 “… throughly furnished unto all good works.”
This will be profitable to bring God glory.
Matthew 5:16 "Let your light so shine before men, that they may see your good works, and glorify your Father which is in heaven."
