There are different people that have different attitudes toward the Word of God; to some the Word of God is bitter (John 6:60-66) and to others the Word of God is sweet. (John 6:67-68) There are people that are offended by the Word of God (Matthew 13:20-21) and there are people that are blest. (1 John 5:3, Psalm 119:165). Notice at least five characteristics of the Psalmist delightful attitude toward the Word of God.
1. His Affection – Psalm 119:97 “O how love I thy law! it is my meditation all the day.” He was so in-love with the Word of God that he thought about it all day long. In verse 98 we see a glimpse of one of the reasons to why the Psalmist is in-love with the Word of God. Psalm 119:98 “Thou through thy commandments hast made me wiser than mine enemies: for they are ever with me.” A man of God once said “The humble believer, equipped with the wisdom of the Word, can see more on his knees than his enemies can on their tiptoes.”
2. His Attention – Psalm 119:99 “I have more understanding than all my teachers: for thy testimonies are my meditation.” The Psalmist had more wisdom then his teachers because he allowed the Word of God to sink in his heart. (Luke 9:43-45). He also had more Wisdom than others because he obey what he heard. Psalm 119:100 “I understand more than the ancients, because I keep thy precepts.” He was a doer of the Word and not a hearer only. Remember what Jesus said, a wise builder is one who hears the Word and Keeps it.
3. His Application – Psalm 119:101 “I have refrained my feet from every evil way, that I might keep thy word.” The Psalmist knew that there would be certain things that would hinder his walk with God, and he was determined to make sure those things did not get in the way of obeying the Word of God. This reminds me of Daniel who purposed in his heart that he would not defile himself with the portion of the king's meat. (Daniel 1:8)Psalm 119:102 “I have not departed from thy judgments: for thou hast taught me.”
