James 4:8 “Draw nigh to God, and he will draw nigh to you. Cleanse your hands, ye sinners; and purify your hearts, ye double minded.”
How can a Christian continue to stay close to God?
1. Do not be lifted up in Pride
James 4:6 “...Wherefore he saith, God resisteth the proud...”
If you do not want God to resist you, and desire to stay close to God, then do not be proud.
Pride is evil, deceptive, destructive, and devouring. It is by pride that wars are started, marriages are broken, and God is not considered. It is by pride that people try to cover-up their sin and shift the blame onto others. When Eve sinned she blamed the devil, and when Adam sinned he blamed Eve.
Proverbs 16:18 “Pride goeth before destruction, and an haughty spirit before a fall.”
Satan was banished from Heaven because he was lifted up in pride. Adam and Eve were thrown out of the garden because they stood against God’s Word, which is pride. Pride causes God’s face to turn away from a person.
Psalm 34:16 “The face of the LORD is against them that do evil...”
Someone once said “Pride’s ultimate goal is to preserve self, to protect self, and to promote self. It may take many different forms, but ultimately it must preserve, protect, and promote self. It is then robbing God of the glory that belongs solely to Him and to Him alone. Pride was birthed with original sin when Lucifer attempted to ascribe glory to himself that was God’s alone. And pride continues to be the great divide between God and man today.”
2. Remain Humble before the Lord
James 4:6 “...but giveth grace unto the humble.”
God’s grace is poured out to those who humble themselves before the Lord. To have God’s favour is to be close to God.
Psalm 34:18 “The LORD is nigh unto them that are of a broken heart; and saveth such as be of a contrite spirit.”
Pride = God will resist you! Humility = God will draw nigh to you!
