Proverbs 11:13 “A talebearer revealeth secrets: but he that is of a faithful spirit concealeth the matter.”
A faithful spirit is a characteristic of one who can keep a secret or someone who does not have to reveal news that is not necessary or helpful.
They are the opposite of a talebearer. A talebearer is one that carries tales (stories) from one place to another; from one person to another. They are busy bodies and find joy in revealing information that might not even concern them or that is not at all helpful to the wellbeing of anyone.
Proverbs 18:8 “The words of a talebearer are as wounds, and they go down into the innermost parts of the belly.”
Talebearers can cause great damage to relationships! Marriages, churches, and best friends are being wounded by talebearers.
Talebearers are subtle in their speech and flattering in their words. They might even bend the truth, add to the truth, or withhold some truth to add some spice to their tale.
Proverbs 14:5 “A faithful witness will not lie: but a false witness will utter lies.”
Proverbs 20:19 “He that goeth about as a talebearer revealeth secrets: therefore meddle not with him that flattereth with his lips.
The best thing a person can do when a talebearer comes their way is not to entertain them or give ear to them. Pour water on their fire.
Proverbs 26:20 “Where no wood is, there the fire goeth out: so where there is no talebearer, the strife ceaseth.”
If you suspect that you are taking part in gossiping or backbiting be quick to stop and repent. If the conversation may be questionable or in doubt then cut it out. Perhaps a friend maybe the victim of tale-bearing and may not know it, then be a friend and tell them.
Proverbs 27:5-6 “Open rebuke is better than secret love. Vs 6 Faithful are the wounds of a friend; but the kisses of an enemy are deceitful.”
