Romans 12:1-2 "I beseech you therefore, brethren, by the mercies of God, that ye present your bodies a living sacrifice, holy, acceptable unto God, which is your reasonable service. vs 2 And be not conformed to this world: but be ye transformed by the renewing of your mind, that ye may prove what is that good, and acceptable, and perfect, will of God."
This invitation which Paul gives to Christians is not by force, threat, or imposing a guilt trip, but rather from the mercies of God. He beseeches and pleads with Christians by God’s mercy to present themselves in a manner that is pleasing to God.
1. A Living Sacrifice
Interestingly, he mentions a “living” sacrifice. As Christians we are dead to sin but alive in Christ, and we are to live a sacrificial life by dying to self-ambition, selfishness and self-seeking; rather living for Jesus Christ, the glory of God, and the sake of the gospel.
Romans 6:11 “Likewise reckon ye also yourselves to be dead indeed unto sin, but alive unto God through Jesus Christ our Lord.”
2 Corinthians 5:15 “And that he died for all, that they which live should not henceforth live unto themselves, but unto him which died for them, and rose again.”
2. Holy We are no doubt called to be Holy as God is Holy. This is a major responsibility for Christians, but also a hard task because God does not even come close to the world’s philosophy and our carnal flesh. God is not of this world - God is different, He is light, and in Him is no darkness. However, God does not give a command without His grace and power to fulfill it. Be encouraged; even though it is a tough process, with God, His Spirit, and His Word, it is possible to be changed into His likeness. The question is, “Are you ready for the refining process?” To be Holy is to be willing to start being a “Living Sacrifice”
1 Peter 1:13-16 “Wherefore gird up the loins of your mind, be sober, and hope to the end for the grace that is to be brought unto you at the revelation of Jesus Christ; vs 14 As obedient children, not fashioning yourselves according to the former lusts in your ignorance: vs 15 But as he which hath called you is holy, so be ye holy in all manner of conversation;
vs 16 Because it is written, Be ye holy; for I am holy.”
If we expect God to adjust to us, there is going to be a fight within us, because God is Holy. We must freely conform to His Holy Image. God is Holy and He will never change. He will not change if society changes, He will not change if you change. God is the same yesterday and today, and will be the same tomorrow. GOD IS HOLY! Will you desire to be like God?
3. Acceptable unto God
This point is very important as the flesh and the world has its own definition of what sacrifice means and what is holy and what is not. So we must make sure that all we do and how we live is acceptable unto God and not unto us. The best way to know what is acceptable unto God is to know the mind of God, and to know the mind of God is to search His Word.
Roman 12:2 “And be not conformed to this world: but be ye transformed by the renewing of your mind, that ye may prove what is that good, and acceptable, and perfect, will of God." (1 Thessalonians 5:20-20)
